Who We Are

Tristen Gottlieb Sturm has been an educator for over 25 years. Before entering the classroom, she worked in the music industry—a chapter she loved—but her passion for teaching led her to earn a Master’s in Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education. She began her teaching career at The Chapin School in her hometown of New York City, then moved to San Francisco, where she’s spent the last 19 years teaching second grade at San Francisco Day School. This year, she’s thrilled to step into a new role as Humanities Extension Coach.

In 2023, Tristen founded The Writers’ Studio, a creative space for young authors to write, collaborate, and build confidence. With a B.A. in English and a deep love of reading, writing, and mentoring, she helps students find their voice and joy in storytelling. A proud New Yorker at heart, she lives in Sausalito with her two kids and their pup.

Our Story and Philosophy

The Writers’ Studio was born from a simple question families often ask:

“Why are there camps for sports, arts, and coding — but not for writing?”

The philosophy at The Writers’ Studio is that every person who wants to be a writer, can. Tristen combined her passion for education and storytelling to create a space where young writers can develop both skill and confidence. Using evidence-based teaching strategies like Universal Design for Learning (UDL), we help remove barriers so every student can succeed — from idea generation to polished writing.
